Glenn W. Ellis is a civil engineer with a strong interest in reforming engineering education. Ellis, who currently serves as associate professor of engineering at Smith College in Northampton, Mass., joined the faculty of Smith College in 2001 to help develop the first engineering program specifically designed for women.

He established a partnership between the engineering and education faculty that benefited the students of both programs. Using learner-centered pedagogy that is based upon research on learning, the program has drawn national recognition as a model of engineering education reform. Ellis has been awarded numerous prizes for teaching, student advising and education research. He has supervised 15 engineering education research grants totaling $2.5 million from organizations, including the National Science Foundation, and has published many papers on the topic. He has served on the Massachusetts Higher Education Task Force on K-12 Math and Science.

His outreach activities include teaching, teacher education and creating a fiction book tailored for middle-school girls that is integrated with engineering activities. He earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Lehigh University and master’s and doctoral degrees in civil engineering and operations research from Princeton University.
